It’s Snow Geese Time in the Midwest By Gary Howey

Light Geese, Snows, Blues and Ross geese are some of the toughest geese in the world to decoy.

They are migratory waterfowl that flies south each year from their home on the Canadian Tundra down to Texas and Louisiana for the winter, then making the long migration back north through the Midwestern states of Oklahoma, Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and the Dakotas.

Unlike other species of waterfowl such as the Canada goose, snow geese lack any natural camouflage, are fairly small, averaging 5 or so pounds.

They’re very alert, weary and always alert, they can grow to a ripe old age with many 10-year-old birds in each flock with banded birds as old as 20 years being taken.

Flying in huge flocks, there are thousands of eyes watching the ground for anything that seems out of place.

Generally the early flights north are the mature birds, trying to get north to claim the best nesting areas.

These mature birds can be tough to call, but will be tired after their long flight and looking for a place to rest.

It all boils down to location, location, location!… Continue reading

What’s Hot At SHOT 2010 Part 1 By Gary Howey

Last week, I attended the annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Technology or  (SHOT) Show as it’s called which was held in Las Vegas.

Over the last several years, because of what’s happening in the world, there have been a lot of paramilitary dealers he show with all types of body armor, weapons, special ammunition, scopes and equipment made especially for Special Forces and SWAT units.

Prior to the opening of the show, we were given the opportunity to test fire many of the newest pistols, shotguns and rifles using the latest and greatest types of ammunition.

There were several things that caught my eye at the show including several new guns. Listed below are some of those that really caught my attention.… Continue reading

Are Hunting & Fishing Dying Away?

Are fishing, hunting, and shooting destined to gradually die away, victims of modern society and an altered landscape? These activities are seriously threatened, and no good answers have surfaced in the search to reverse declining participation.

Are these the sunset years for the traditional outdoor sports?

A new book by a lifelong outdoorsman tackles that question, and lays out an innovative vision for solving this defining challenge.

“Paint the Next Sunrise: A Future for Hunting and Fishing” opens by describing the current situation–declining participation, increasing human population, increasing urbanization, single-parent households, fewer people drawn to outdoor activities. Then, author Mark Strand points out that we have two choices: preside over the sunset of these great sports, or paint the next sunrise for them.

Additional chapters explore how these sports fit into our modern world, and the benefits they offer to people’s lives. The book ends with the vision for a new nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the trend of declining participation.

Purposely written to be a quick read, Strand hopes it will become “a book that lots of people have actually read, so we can get to work right away on the solution.”

“What’s missing,” says Strand, “is the elementary school for these sports–one place to go, where beginners can sample any activity that sounds fun, where they are quickly taught how to find success. Helping beginners succeed, encouraging them to explore, and letting them freely choose their favorites is the formula that will produce a steady stream of new participants.”

This book is destined to shape the national debate over the future of hunting and fishing in America. If you care about these traditional outdoor sports, it’s a must read.… Continue reading

Competition shooting: Ida County youths embrace shooting program By Larry Myhre

Reprinted from the Sioux City Journal

Clay target shooting is a whole lot of fun a group of Ida County youths have found out. And it’s also challenging and rewarding.

Thanks to the Ida County Pheasants Forever chapter more than 50 youths have enthusiastically taken part in the Scholastic Clay Target Program, an Iowa DNR-supported program with national affiliation through the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation.

It began with a challenge put out by Pheasants Forever entitled “No Child Left Indoors.”

That got Rusty Sadler, Ida Grove, thinking. He had heard about the shooting sports program and did some research.

Soon, he and Jerry Jensen, Ida Grove, signed on to be certified as shooting instructors.

Then the chapter, headed by Rich Smith, president, Ida Grove, put the word out.

“I thought if we got five or 10 kids it would be good,” Sadler said. “Fifty one showed up and enrolled.… Continue reading
